Paper Planes

Gallery

This September, Baddeley Brothers was briefly back on London’s Tabernacle Street, near the site of its old factory, 25 years after the doors last closed.

The staff then would have been surprised to see their traditional print press techniques hanging on the walls of a bold, trendsetting gallery, being lauded by the art world as part of the hugely influential London Design Festival and 100% Design exhibition.

Based in the vibrant Shoreditch area of London, Gallery FUMI chose to feature Studio Glithero and its collaborative work with Baddeley Brothers as part of the exciting Studio Ware exhibition. The intricate paper planes developed for Wallpaper’s Handmade show in Milan, were skilfully framed and mounted on the walls of the studio. The video to show the making of the planes, was also on display, paying homage to the faithful relationship between the individual printers and their machines.

Director Charles Pertwee commented: “It’s a wonderful tribute to the proud heritage of this firm, that some of the skilled men and women featured in this film are, in a way, back on the street where they learned their craft. For me, visiting the street where my predecessors built up the business, adds another level of meaning to the artwork and I’m proud that our specialist printing capabilities are now being admired by designers across the capital.”

Gallery Director Valerio Capo added: “At Gallery FUMI we specialise in limited edition or one-off design pieces, from designers who push materials and techniques to their limits. The paper planes collaboration by Studio Glithero and Baddeley Brothers is a beautiful example of this, and I’m delighted that they have extended their original project for this exhibition, assembling extraordinary three-dimensional pieces of wall art.
As masters of their craft, the printers at Baddeley Brothers have been able to turn a traditional technique into contemporary art.
